The chain spaces in this pattern were originally included to maximize my yarn and make the most shawl I possibly could out of a single ball of yarn. As I continued making the shawl, these stacked chain spaces almost brought to mind raindrops trickling down a window. Although these chain spaces don’t follow the chaotic flow of a rivulet of rain, the image stuck in my mind.

Of course, you can always leave the chain spaces out to make a solid, snuggly shawl and wrap yourself up in warmth.

I’ve called this shawl a crescent shape, although really it is more like 2/3 of a hexagon. The extra bit means that the top edge is not flat, so it will hang on your shoulders better. Less likely to slip off.

This pattern is technically a six row repeat… technically. Really, it’s a one row repeat, but every 6th row, you do a little something to add the next bunch of chain spaces. Don’t want chain spaces? Then it’s totally a one row shawl!
