This is a fundraising pattern for my late brother, Mino (1971-2004).

Roark is a modified version of Embo. Due to tendinitis on my elbows and arthritis on right pinky, I have not touched needles for a year since my annual fundraising event, Nimara & Japarta Knit-A-Thon 2018. For the Knit- A-Thon 2019, I picked up the needles and started knitting Embo for my good friend, Kumiko. Like always, as soon as I started knitting, a new design idea came to me.

Each cable in Embo has only one twist; four twist lined up in one line at the center of the cowl. I wanted it looks a bit sharper, so had skinny cables twisted twice.

While I was not able to knit, I spent all the knitting time for reading. I have three favorite protagonists from the books, whose names will be on my future designs. Howard Roark is the first one.

Skills required: k, ktbl, p, cables

Sample:
Finished size 10” high x 14” circumference (25.4cm x 35.6 cm) when not stretched.
Yarn: Madelinetosh 80/10/10 Worsted MCN (80% Merino, 10% Cashmere goat, 10% Nylon, 187 yards, Rambler) 159 yards/145.3m used.
Needles: Size US 7 (4.5mm) circular or DPN
Gauge (knitted in round): 10 stitches and 13 rounds = 2”/5cm in Stockinette stitch.

All the proceeds of this pattern will be donated to the Minoru Hokari Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Australian National University. My late brother, Minoru Hokari (“Mino” 1971-2004) died of cancer at the age of 32. The scholarship fund supports young scholars who study Indigenous Australians through fieldwork. We are trying to fully fund it to achieve its perpetuity. Please help.
