Robe of Glory Gansey
I created this Robe of Glory gansey design in 1979, inspired by the traditional fairisle knitting of the islands off the northern coasts of Scotland.
Two colours are knitted into each row, the colours alternately carried behind the work to create a soft and lightweight double-layer fabric which has excellent insulation qualities - wonderful to snuggle into on a cool day.
The pattern, for standard gauge single bed machine, gives colour stitch charts for each section, as well as written instructions and links to useful resources.
It is said that a special sweater would be knitted for a young man at the time that he reached adolescence.
The motif sequence tells a life story in symbols. The Water nurtures the Seed which grows to be a Flower. The Anchor is for hope, followed by the Tree of Life, a Star to guide you on your way, and a Crown of Glory - your reward in life.
