This cowl is just the thing for that special yarn or gradient set that you’ve been saving to show off a sequence of colors. The main body has an interesting texture that is created using only two pattern rows, and that allows the knitter to either blend a set of graduated colors more smoothly, or that emphasizes the color-changing boundary in an interesting way when contrasting colors are used.

You can use a slightly more advanced cast on to make a nice reversible edge that is matched by a 2-stitch i-cord cast off, or choose to go with a simple cable cast on.

The size of the finished cowl is 26” in diameter by 12”, and if you put it on inside-out by accident, it will show off the attractive “wrong” side as well.

Yarn: Frabjulous Fibers, Mad Hatter (1) mini skein packs (430 yds),
or any dk/light worsted weight yarn totaling 430
yards (5 colors used in photos)
Needles: Circular needle, US9/6.5mm, 20”
Notions: Tapestry needle, Stitch marker (1)
Gauge: 4 stitches/inch

This gauge produces a warm fabric, and will allow wet blocking to a slightly larger size if you’d like. It seems dense visually because of the nature of the linen stitch. You may easily adjust the size by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 2 (always cast on an odd number of stitches).

If you’d like to use absolutely every inch of your yarn, just join your colors together as you reach the end of each instead of at the row marker. You will end up with your color change occurring in locations other than at the beginning of the marked “row”, but you will get a bit of additional height, and no waste of your precious gradient set!

Available with purchase of the pattern is a little photo tutorial for the optional cast-on.
