Instructions are included for both fingering and worsted weight yarn, and there are 6 stitch pattern variations so you can knit a custom combination that feels just right for you. There are four sizes to fit a wide range of heads so you knit find the right fit no matter who you’re knitting for.
This pattern assumes knowledge of working in the round and decreasing. Both charts and written directions are provided for all six stitch patterns. See last photo for included stitch pattern options.
This pattern has options for both fingering and worsted weight yarns included in one pattern file. Find the coordinating fingerless mitts pattern here.
Sizes: XS (S, M, L) to fit head circumferences up to 18.5 (20.5, 22.5, 24.5)“ / 47 (52, 57, 62) cm
Gauge, Needles & Yarn Requirements: See below details in each yarn weight. All gauges are for Textured Stitch in the round on larger needles, blocked, over 4” / 10 cm. Adjust needle size as needed to obtain gauge. Use DPNs or preferred needle for small circumferences.
Important note on gauge: several preview knitters needed to use larger needle sizes than specified here to achieve the stated gauge and intended fit. Please be sure to swatch, and if you know yourself to be a tight knitter you may want to start with a needle size or two above what’s listed in order to achieve gauge.
Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle
Fingering Weight
Needles: US 1 / 2.25 mm (Ribbing), US 1.5 / 2.5 mm (Main)
Gauge: 26 sts and 44 rounds = 4” / 10 cm
Yarn Requirements: 145 (170, 200, 230) yds / 133 (155, 183, 210) m
Folded brim - add extra 50 (55, 60, 65) yds / 46 (50, 55, 59) m
Sample shown in Knitting for Olive Merino held with Untold Pure Silk Mohair, worked in Texture 1.
Note: If you are using a lighter fingering weight yarn held alone, you may find it challenging to achieve gauge. If your gauge is tighter and you feel that the fabric would be too loose at the recommended gauge, consider knitting one size up to accommodate for this difference.
Worsted Weight
Needles: US 3 / 3.25 mm (Ribbing), US 4 / 3.5 mm (Main)
Gauge: 19 sts and 34 rounds = 4” / 10 cm
110 (130, 150, 175) yds / 101 (119, 137, 160) m
Folded brim - add extra 40 (40, 45, 50) yds / 37 (37, 41, 46) m
Sample shown in Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino, worked in Texture 2.
