Rodeo (Naa’ahóóhai) Sweater
I made the Rodeo Sweater to fulfill my desire to make a light weight sweater/shirt with a color yoke that is authentically southwestern. I imagine wearing this at the local rodeo. Sitting in the bleachers with a big ol’ soda pop and some roasted corn.
The Navajo word for Rodeo is Naa’ahóóhai which means chicken. Navajo rodeos used to include chicken pulls. A chicken pull is just how it sounds. While horseback, two competitors would ride out and grab at a mostly buried chicken and, once unearthed, the other competitors would try to steal it. Later Navajo rodeos began to focus on horse racing and wild cow riding. I love to add “movement” in my pieces and the arrows were fitting with the idea. Originally the arrows were inspired by an old Navajo rug that had hints of blues and yellows. I may make multiple designs based on this one rug design because I loved it so much.
