It all starts with tubular cast-on. Once established, the edge stitches appear to grow out of nowhere. Next the 1x1 rib creates an understated border. Then the body. An easy to work knit and purl pattern peppered with slip stitches; the pattern only LOOKS complicated. You may choose to top it all off with a pom-pom, or leave it plain.

This pattern can accommodate a variety of yarn weights and is great for using up partial skeins and stash yarns. Sport held double with a kid mohair/silk blend, light worsted, and DK all work fantastically.

Samples were knit from different yarns, combinations, and textures: all producing beautiful results. The samples fit myself and my elementary school aged daughter. Albeit with varying degrees of snugness, but equal amounts of coolness. The finished diameter is 20.5-22” with 8-11” of height.

If your gauge is wildly different than 5.5 stitches per inch, it is advised to modify your needle size or reconsider your yarn choice. Your hat will be outside the range for an average adult otherwise.

You will need approximately 180-260 yards of DK or light worsted yarn. Yardage is dependent on your total height. If you hold two lighter weight yarns double, you will need the same yardage for both yarns (essentially double).
Additionally: You will need 15 yards of waste yarn for the tubular cast-on.

Needles: size 6/4mm 16” circular needles and DPNs (for the crown). You may prefer a snug brim, in which case: use smaller needles for the brim (3/3.25mm-5/3.75mm)

Other materials: scissors, yarn needle for finishing, optional pom-pom and thread for attaching.
