Rolling Tide Cowl is one of nine designs in The Sun and Fog Winter 2021 collection, a collaboration of knit and crochet designs by San Francisco Bay Area designers, dyers and yarn shops. This winter collection is meant to inspire makers to create a little something special for themselves after the holiday rush or at any time. Each design in the collection has a size which uses 100 grams of yarn or less. It’s an honor to be part of this collaboration with so many amazing people.
I love looking at the ocean, mesmerized by the movement of the water. Hoping to catch the picture-perfect splash and spray of water as it meets solid ground, I take countless videos and boomerangs of the waves rolling towards the shore or crashing against the rocks. The water’s changing moods making its way to shore are captured in this design.
I had the honor of designing this cowl with Fiber Circle Yarns’ Dreamy DK, a gorgeous 100% merino yarn. Alisha and Becca are the dyers behind Fiber Circle Yarns. I was introduced to their yarn when I met Alisha at Stitches West 2020. I love their yarn color names as they reflect some of our Northern California treasures.
Rolling Tide Cowl is worked in the round in two different brioche stitch patterns. One is an offset wave pattern, and the other is a flat cable pattern.
Extra yarn is included in the yarn requirement for each size as written. Gauge is not critical for this pattern, however, a different gauge will affect the size of your cowl and the amount of yarn used.
Size 1 is great for leftover yarn. If you have approximately 50 grams of DK weight yarn left from another project, you can use that for one of your colors. If you have slightly less yarn, the height of your cowl can be adjusted for the amount of yarn you have (sizing adjustments included in the pattern).
