Ron's Earflap Hat
Actor Rupert Grint felt an affinity to Ron Weasley from the very beginning. “We had a lot of things in common. Obviously, I’m a ginger. We both come from large families. I felt my family was quite similar to the Weasleys, really.” Costume designer Judianna Makovsky dressed Ron in oversized sweaters and handmade clothes to reflect the Weasley’s economic status. In later films, costume designer Jany Temime would put together plaids, checks, and stripes—sometimes all at once—in a palette of orange, brown, and green. She says, “We would laugh every year when we put his costumes together. We would think, that’s so awful. You must wear always wear what Mom gives you. But… his mom has really bad taste.”
Starting with easy garter stitch earflaps worked flat back and forth, this replica of the popular hat that Ron wears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is then joined in the round, bringing all the pieces together for minimal finishing. Stranded colorwork motifs work up quickly in super bulky yarn, followed by quick spiral crown shaping. Loosely braided tassels are then added to the top of the hat and tips of each earflap.
