Ropes and Ripples Cushion
Introduction
Inspired by the crafts and skills associated with working on the sea, this design combines traditional elements of cable knitting with colour and function. The bold cables adorning the front panel are complemented by the pleasing cabled buttonholes on the reverse – making a cushion cover with equally attractive, and contrasting, sides. These ropes and rippling waves will provide comfort and pleasure ̶ be it at on your favourite comfy chair at home or for al fresco picnics on the beach with family and friends.
Skills Required
Cable cast-on (or your preferred method for producing a firm, stable edge), knitting and purling back and forth, intarsia, decreasing and increasing stitches, cable knitting (patterns are provided in chart form and written). Cushion is worked flat in pieces, and then seamed.
Materials
Albanach Yarns Teviot Light Aran (50% Shetland wool, 50% alpaca, 190m/208 yards, 100g) in two colours:
Yarn A (Gritstone) x 1 skein
Yarn B (Haar) x 2 skeins
4mm/US size 6 needles for working back and forth (straight or circular, with minimum cable length of 60cm/24”, as you prefer)
Cable needle
Darning needle (plus all your usual knitting accessories e.g. row counter, scissors)
33cm x 33cm /13x 13” cushion pad
12(13) x 2cm diameter buttons (Sample shows buttons from The Border Tart (http://www.tartsart.co.uk/) – including an extra, 13th, button for decoration)
Gauge
21 sts and 25 rows to 10cm/4” measured over cable pattern using 4mm/US size6 needles.
21 sts and 28 rows to 10cm/4” measured over reverse stocking stitch using 4mm/US size6 needles.
Adjust needle size if needed to achieve correct gauge.
Finished size: To fit cushion pad 33cm/13” x 33cm/13”.
