It’s winter in Stars Hollow. Rory and Jess walk through town talking and kissing. A few moments later the couple steps into Luke’s diner, where they meet Lorelai. Rory takes off her beautiful hat and instead of putting it on the table, she hands it to you……
Would be quite nice right? Now you can pretend this actually did happen to you, or reenact the scene after you made this gorgeous hat for yourself.

This pattern is inspired on the hat that Rory wears in the serie Gilmore Girls, season 3, episode 10 “that’ll do pig”.
I’ve studied it throughout and this design has exaclty the same number of big and small cables, the cables twist exactly the same number of times as the original, and even the decreasing part is quite accurate. The original hat has a small cable that twists quick and a larger cable that twists slower, the ratio in the pattern is exactly the same. I even managed to count the stitches of the original hat.
The border is double in this pattern. I’m not sure about how this is done with the original hat, but I couldn’t discover a set up row, the border seems to be folded, so I used this way to duplicate that.

I hope you’ll enjoy knitting this hat as much as I did studying and designing it.
A knitter mentioned a few errors and a pdf format problem. They are fixed now.

In addition to the pattern for Rory’s hat, I wrote a version for heavier, 10 ply yarn. You’ll need +/- 180 m.
Unlike the pattern above it’s not exactly the same as the hat that Rory wears on the show, but it’s pretty close. It’ll give you the opportunity to make it in heavier yarn, so it will be warmer, or to make it from DK / 8ply yarn or lighter to make a smaller size hat. This pattern also gives additional information how to make a kids / teen size hat with worsted yarn.
