Rory Ribbed Beanie
THE INSPIRATION
Rory Gilmore is so relatable. She puts so much pressure on herself to accomplish everything expected of her, just like we all do. Her story is a great reminder that it’s so important to never give up on chasing our dreams! This beanie was designed with Rory’s college adventures in mind. Its classic style is youthful, yet timeless. I’m sure you will find yourself reaching for it again and again as autumn transitions into winter.
THE CONSTRUCTION
Knit in the round from the bottom up, the Rory Ribbed Beanie features a cozy folded brim for extra warmth. It’s knit in simple 1×1 ribbing with some basic decreases at the crown, so this pattern is ideal for a beginner who wants to learn how to make hats! This design is knit with negative ease, so it is very stretchy and suitable to fit most adults – yep, it’s unisex too! I got the custom 2” x 3” rounded rectangle leather patch with stitch holes from Ridge Leather Co., and I was very happy with the result, so I’d definitely recommend them if you want to put a patch on yours as well!
THE YARN
The yarn I chose for this project is Blue Sky Fibers Woolstok Worsted, available from Stars Hollow Yarns (my local yarn shop, and they have an online shop as well!). I love Woolstok because it’s made of a rustic fine highland wool, which is easy to work with and makes such a soft fabric. It comes in two skein sizes - you will need two 50g skeins to make one beanie, or you could get two beanies out of the 150g size. There are many different colors to choose from as well!
MATERIALS
-
Approximately 158 yd (144 m) of worsted weight (4) yarn
-
US size 8 (5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) and double-pointed needles in the same size (optional if you use magic loop)
-
Common notions, such as stitch markers, measuring tape, scissors, and a tapestry needle
MEASUREMENTS
With brim folded, approximately 9” (23 cm) tall and 15” (38 cm) around at the brim - don’t worry, it’s very stretchy! With brim unfolded, it reaches 11.5” (29 cm) tall. Note that I chose not to block mine so these are unblocked measurements.
GAUGE
27 sts x 26 rounds = 4” in unstretched and unblocked 1x1 ribbing (main stitch pattern)
