Rosemarie’s Garden Shawl honors the woman who taught me to knit and her magical West Coast garden. Rosemarie’s memories of our afternoons in her garden are lost to Alzheimer’s but they remain some of my fondest childhood reflections. Integrating lace on garter and stockinette stitch backgrounds, all three pattern sizes capture the rich textures and foliage that grace the Pacific West Coast and Rosemarie’s garden.
The shawl’s top-down construction begins with a panel of garter stitch which creates texture accentuated by the sheen and structure of silk blends, and makes for a rapid start to the project. For those who wear shawls around the neck kerchief-style, with the long tip in front, the garter stitches fold up gently with the lace cascading below. When worn around the shoulders this fabric provides extra warmth around the neck, right where it is needed most.
Tips for adapting the design to personalize your Rosemarie’s Garden Shawl are included throughout the pattern. Interchangeable charts may be repeated as many or few times as desired to achieve the perfect size. Transforming the pattern into a stockinette or all-over-lace version is easy with the assistance of these helpful tips from the designer.
No two gardens are alike and our memories of the past are constantly shifting. With this in mind, Rosemarie’s Garden Shawl is designed for versatility. Whether working from the design as written or following the tips to modify the shawl, this pattern is fun to knit, easy to memorize, and a timeless addition to your wardrobe.
