Rosslare Pullover is a simple, cosy piece with a seamless construction and easy but striking lace details. The unusual construction contrasts with the plain stockinette body: The lace panels of the bottom-up sleeves continue across the front and back shoulders before being grafted together in the centre of the yoke. Stitches are picked up from the edge of the yoke in order to work the body from the top down.

The pullover is named after the ferry port of Rosslare in the south-east of Ireland because the lace pattern on the sleeves looks like the wake of a ship. The patterns from the two sleeves meet in the centre of the yoke like two waves coming together.

The design starts by knitting the sleeves in the round from the bottom up. Each sleeve is divided at the armhole and is continued flat to form the yoke. The two sides of the yoke are grafted together in the centre and stitches are then picked up at the edge of the yoke in order to knit the rest of the body from the top down. The pattern includes instructions with or without waist shaping.

The design can be knitted in any Aran weight or thick worsted weight yarn. You may want to avoid heavy, non-elastic fibres such as pure cotton. If using worsted weight, you will be knitting slightly above gauge (i.e. with larger needles than the yarn would usually call for), which may lead to increased pilling. Choose a robust, high-twist yarn in order to minimise this issue.

NEEDLES & NOTIONS
Always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below.

  • 5.5 mm circular needle, or as needed to meet stockinette gauge
  • 4 mm/US size circular needle, or as needed to meet ribbing gauge
  • if not using magic loop: additional set of 4 mm dpns and set of 5.5 mm dpns
  • 5 stitch markers
  • 5 stitch holders (or waste yarn/spare circular needles)
  • tapestry needle

Please note that the pattern comes in two files, one for sizes XS-L and one for sizes XL-5XL, because the neckline shaping is different for the two groups. When purchasing the pattern, you will of course have access to both files.

This pattern has been tech-edited, and tested in sizes S-XL. Please contact me if you are interested in testing one of the remaining sizes.
