There is nothing like working with a rustic yarn such as the Ross Farm longwools. It’s less forgiving than a springy commercial yarn, but I find the character of a yarn with such halo to create a great look that can’t be achieved any other way. In order to get a nice, slouchy look it will take a nice strong blocking to relax the yarn. But if you don’t have a farm nearby, a lovely commercial yarn will make a great hat, too.

Required Skills:
This pattern requires the knitter to work knit, purl, and decrease stitches in the round for the basic hat shape. The hat begins with corrugated ribbing, which combines stranded work and 1x1 ribbing. Stranded knitting is represented in the color knitting chart. This pattern does not recommend a particular method for knitting in the round.

Note: Pattern includes a tutorial to show how to do the cable cast on using two colors.

Gauge measured after blocking:
22 sts/24 rows = 4” (10 cm) square (colorwork with larger needles)
26 sts/24 rows = 4” (10 cm) square (ribbing with smaller needles)

Good Yarn Substitutions:
Cascade 220, Dream in Color Classy, Madelinetosh Vintage or your favorite worsted weight wool or wool-blend yarn. Choose two contrasting colors with different values.
