Rothko Felted Coasters
Irresistibly beautiful hues are found in every colorway of Noro Kureyon yarn and when felted, the palette of colors blend together like a modern, abstract painting. With just one skein, six small masterpieces are created.
Even if you’ve never felted before, you can make these coasters! Pattern provides detailed instructions for knitting, felting, and cutting, along with photos of each step.
Yarn
In addition to one skein of Noro Kureyon, you’ll need a small amount (approx. 16 yds /15 m) of waste yarn in a comparable weight for selvages. The selvage yarn must be 100% wool which will felt, such as Paton’s Classic Wool or Cascade 220 (NOT superwash!).
Other Items You’ll Need
- Top loading washing machine
- Zippered pillow protector or mesh laundry bag
- A pair of well-faded jeans will help with the agitation in the washing machine
- Rotary cutter (using a rotary cutter makes cutting straight lines along a ruler’s edge extremely easy, and is definitely a tool worth having for this project). Also suggested: a cutting mat (to protect your cutting surface).
- Metal-edged ruler
- Scissors
Dimensions
Each finished coaster is 3 ½” x 3 ½” / 9 x 9 cm.
Six coasters in total.
Skills Used
Long tail cast on, knitting in the round (using your choice of double pointed needles or a circular), felting using a top loading washing machine.
