Rowan shawl
Rowan is a symmetrical triangular shaped shawl with a large wingspan, knitted top down. The pattern has both written instructions as well as charts.
You will start by casting on stitches for the center triangular section shaped with short rows, and then work 2 more sections and the border shaped with regular increases along the sides and center ‘spine’ of the shawl.
Sections of the shawl can be repeated as few or as many times as you would like to achieve desired look and size of the shawl (or can be omitted altogether).
I have made 2 samples of this shawl: a medium sized sample worked in 2 colours of sport weight yarn, and an XL sample worked in a single colour of Aran weight yarn, however you are of course free to use your imagination and make it with any other yarn weight and as many or as few colours as you want.
YARN:
Sample 1 (XL, single colour): Thrive from Woollentwine Fibrestudio, 100% German merino, unspun cakes of approx. 100 grams. Colour - Barley. Yarn held double to achieve Aran weight.
Sample 2 (Medium size, 2 colours): Vovo from Rosa Pomar. 50 grams / 143 meters (156 yards), 100% wool. MC colour - 80, CC colour - 11
YARN SUBSTITUTION:
Non-superwash, wooly yarn of approx. worsted weight for XL shawl and sport weight for medium shawl. If you decide to make the larger version, I would also recommend using lighter yarns (unspun, woolen spun, yarns with addition of mohair or brushed alpaca) to ensure that your shawl is not too heavy.
YARDAGE:
For XL shawl (single colour, 1 rep of Section 3): 5 cakes of Thrive held double or approx. 980 meters / 1072 yards of Aran weight yarn
For medium shawl (2 colours, 2 reps of Section 3): MC 630 meters / 689 yards and CC 230 meters / 252 yards of sport weight yarn
Please note that your yarn consumption will depend on your yarn choice, gauge, the size of your finished shawl and any other alterations you might make to the pattern.
GAUGE:
12 sts / 30 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches in garter stitch worked flat after washing and light blocking on size A needles for XL shawl in worsted weight
18 sts / 40 rows per 10 cm / 4 inches in garter stitch worked flat after washing and light blocking on size B needles for medium shawl in sport weight
This shawl can be worked at a variety of gauges, however please note that if you gauge is significantly different from the one specified in the pattern, it will affect the final size of your shawl and your yarn consumptionl
NEEDLES AND CROCHET HOOKS:
• Size A Circular needles 100 - 120 cm (for working flat) – 5 mm (US 8) for XL shawl in worsted weight
• Size B Circular needles 100 – 120 cm (for working flat) – 3.5 mm (US 4) for Medium shawl in sport weight
• 4.5 mm (US 7) crochet hook for bobbles for worsted weight shawl
• 3 mm (US D/3) crochet hook for bobbles for sport weight shawl
Please note that needle size is just a suggestion, you might need to change the size of your needles to achieve gauge
