Ruben the Red Panda
Ruben was my design entry for the Amigurumi.com Design Contest this year, and I absolutely love how he turned out! I hope you like him too!
All the amigurumi pattern information is below. If you do decide to make Ruben, I’d absolutely love to see your makes. You can share them with me on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #CrochetRubenTheRedPanda and by tagging me @cillacrochets.
Pattern Information
- Language: English
- Pattern Terminology: US Terms
- Skill Level: Intermediate
- Techniques: This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. While I’ve used the X-shaped single crochet stitch, this is not required. The stitches used include single crochet, increase, decrease, slip stitches, and magic circles. You will also need to know how to crochet in Front & Back Loops Only for parts of this pattern. Colour changes are also used for Ruben’s ears and tail.
Amigurumi Size
I used the following yarn with a 3.5 mm (E) hook and the amigurumi turned out to be 19 cm / 7.5 “ high when seated (from bottom to top of ears) and 21 cm / 8.3 “ wide when arms are splayed. Please note: I do tend to crochet quite tightly, so your Ruben may turn out larger.
Materials Needed
- Aran/Worsted Weight yarn (see yarn section below)
- Crochet hook size 3.5 mm (E)
- Stuffing
- Needle
- Scissors
- Pins
- Stitch marker
- Safety eyes 9 mm (Optional. A crocheted eye tutorial is included within the PDF pattern as safety eyes are not suitable for children under 3 years of age. For this you’ll need a little extra black worsted weight yarn.)
Yarn & Amounts Needed
I used Rico Design Creative Cotton Aran in the following colours. Amount used is in brackets.
- Fox Orange (75 grams = 127.5m / 140yds)
- White (13 grams = 22.1m / 24.1yds)
- Grey (50 grams = 85m / 93 yds)
- Red (12 grams = 20.4m / 22.3 yds)
- Black (5 grams = 8.5m / 9.3yds)
Additional Information
- Yarn: You can of course use different yarn to make Ruben, just be aware that a different yarn may mean you need to change the crochet hook size you use. It will also impact the size of your final make.
- Crochet Hook: I recommend using a crochet hook smaller than what your yarn label states. This will ensure stuffing won’t appear through your stitches.
- Eyes: Please note that safety eyes are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age. As an alternative, use additional black yarn to crochet or embroider the eyes. A simple crochet eye tutorial is included within the PDF pattern.
- Selling your makes: You’re more than welcome to sell your makes using my pattern with credit to the crochet designer. The pattern itself however cannot be copied, reproduced or sold. Please read the copyright notice below for more information.
