Rubik is a fun little mosaic crochet pattern with lots of room for creativity and puzzle play. Hence the name Rubik, you play with it by turning the tiles, just like with the Rubik’s cube we all know.

I wanted to make an interactive pattern with only two simple tiles that you can then turn on all sides and that’s when the magic happens! So, I invite you to make your own unique Rubik crochet piece, just you wait and see how much fun it is to play with once you start turning and twisting those tiles and combining them in different manners.

This is an all chart pattern and you can work it either flat or in the round. I‘ve included charts of both tiles turned on all sides in sets of 9, 4 and single tiles. Plus 2 more sets of a four tile combos that I really like. But please do play and see what happens, I feel like there‘s lots of options here that I haven‘t yet explored and can‘t wait to see what you guys make!

Yarn & hook:

You can use any yarn you like for this pattern and a hook that suits your yarn. Yarn stats will vary depending on which version and project you do.

The original Rubik blanket, in the Stairways to Heaven version, is made on a 3.5 mm hook with the Scheepjes Stonewashed and Riverwashed colorpack for color B and Merino 100% from Katia for color A.

This version is a small sized throw, 130 cm long and 86 cm wide, including the border. For this blanket you will need:

1 x Colorpack from Scheepjes for color B, I used 50 out of the 58 mini skeins included in the pack (10 g =26 m, 78% cotton, 22% acrylic).

14 x skeins of Merino 100% from Katia (50 g = 102 m)

For the border: 5 x 50 g skeins of Stonewashed and 1 skein of Katia.

Complete colorway for this version is included in the pattern.

The crazy pink cushion is worked flat, using hand dyed fingering weight yarn from Systrabönd on a 2.5 mm hook. This yarn is 100% wool that comes in 100 g = 385 m skeins. I did a 9 x 9 tiles collage with no added border and used 1 skein of each colour for the front side. You could do the same for the backside, but I just sewed mine straight on the cushion. The cushion measures approx. 50 x 50 cm.

For this cushion you will need:
1 x 100 g skeins each of colors A & B.

The classy grey cushion is worked flat and then adding the border in the round, using Saga Wool from Icewear Garn, that’s DK weight on a 4 mm hook. I did a 8 tile combo for that one plus border chart option no. 2.

For this cushion you will need:
3 x 50 g skeins of each colour for the front side panel. Measurement approx. 50 x 50 cm, including the border.

Gauge:

Approx. 28 ST & 28 rows = 10 cm (4 inches). Using finger weight yarn and a 2.5 mm hook. The pink cushion.

Approx. 24 ST & 24 rows = 10 cm (4 inches). Using the yarn combo for the blanket and a 3.5 mm hook.

Approx. 20 ST & 20 rows = 10 cm (4 inches). Using DK weight yarn and a 4 mm hook. The grey cushion.

Sizes:

Rubik is an interactive pattern where you can arrange the tile designs as you like. It is worked in repeats of 14 stitches and 14 rows, so you can use this pattern to make various project in any size you like.

To decide on how many repeats, you need for you project, the best way is to start by making a small swatch (just 1 repeat or 1 tile) of the pattern, using the yarn you have chosen. Then you can measure how large your repeat is and take it from there, adjusting this to the size you want your project to be.

Colors

You will need at least two colours and I recommend using contrasting colours. An ombre affect would go great, using a slow gradient cake for one or both colors. For my Stairways to heaven Rubik blanket I used white for the main color and then did a color fade in color B, the pattern color. That was super fun and you can easily get this same effect, doing a color fade using scraps of different colors from your stash.

General Instructions

This pattern consists of two different “tile” designs made in a mosaic pattern. The two tiles are slightly different but they are sisters in a way, so they fit together in the sense that they line up when combined. The fun bit is that you can arrange these two tiles in different ways and play with the way they turn. The repetitions can go from 14 and up to 42, so you can really make a Rubik piece in any size you like.

I wanted to get back to the basics, so no slanted stitches or other extras this time, just all straight forward classic mosaic crochet joy!

If lefthanded, you can follow the charts from left to right no problem, it´ll look the same.
