Ruffletopia
Let me know if you will be in Rhinebeck and need pattern help!
The luxurious ruffles serve a purpose - mostly to get compliments - but they also keep the cold air out of your sleeves.
The ruffles are crocheted onto the knit surface, but don’t be intimidated - the level of crochet complexity is “easier-than-a-granny-square.”
Sizes: S (M, L) = 6½ (7, 7½) inches, 16.5 18, 19 cm around palm. Err in the direction of negative ease if you are between sizes.
Adjustments are easy if you are knitting for yourself (or a nearby friend) and can try on as you go.
Yarn: Washable sock weight yarn containing 20-25% nylon for the main color, ~420 yds (384 m)/100 g, plus any washable fingering / sock weight yarn for the contrast colors.
Yarn estimates rounded up to nearest 5 yards or meters:
Yards as follows for S (M, L):
- Main color (MC) 225 (260, 280)
- Contrast color 1 (CC1) 30 (30, 35)
- Ruffles - total required, mix of 5-6
colors: 205 (240, 295)
Meters as follows for S (M, L):
- Main color (MC) 205 (240, 270)
- Contrast color 1 (CC1) 25 (30, 30)
- Ruffles - total required, mix of 5-6 colors: 190 (220, 270)
Grams as follows for S (M,L):
- Main color (MC) 60 (70, 80)
- Contrast color 1 (CC1) 10 (10, 10)
- Ruffles - total required, mix of 5-6 colors: 50 (60, 70)
Note that CC1 rounds form the base of the crocheted ruffles and are not visible on the finished gloves. Stash leftovers work well, or use one or more of the ruffle yarns (as long as they contrast with the MC).
The cuffs call for 6 large beads or tiny buttons with shanks (3 per cuff). Pictured are 8 mm stone beads from Fire Mountain Gems - amethyst and carnelian.
Suggested yarn: Ewetopia Wisco Sock (80% Superwash merino/ 20% nylon, 115 g = 420 yds/ 384 m).
Pictured colorways:
Hands - Silver (pale grey), Charcoal (black), Black Magic (dark purple/ black variegated)
Ruffles - red tones - Garnet, Pomegranate, Poppy, Pumpkin, and Cider. Green/ purple tones - Monet’s Lilies, Shady Grove, Mountain Forest, Caterpillar, Succulent, and Fog.
Ewetopia makes Wisco sock available in mini-skeins, perfect for this project. Call or email for color availability. Pick a prepared mini-skein kit or select your own colors. Kits may include stone beads, as available (ask).
