For Ruffliato you need two contrasting yarns: two solids, one solid or semi solid combined with a color gradient, or two color gradients that go well together as a pair but that are distinctive enough to make out the individual modules – all these ensembles will do. You can easily combine different fibers as well. The amount of yarn you need will of course depend on the tightness of your knitting and the weight of your yarn. The size will depend on the amount of modules you want to knit.

Ruffliato is comprised of two halves and each half consists of two parts - a Waxing Part and a Waning Part. Simply knit the Waxing Part until you have reached half of the desired length and/or until you have used up to 25% of your Yarn A and/or Yarn B. If you are using different weights or if you start with different amounts of the same weight, you will have to start the Waning Part as soon as you have used 25% of either of the two yarns, because you will need 75% to finish the rest of your shawl. If you are using 1 ply yarns, play it safe and use 23% only. I have knitted several projects with 1 ply yarns and counted on my scale to indicade yardage. With some 1 ply yarns it’s not safe to conclude that the same weight of yarn means the same yarndage. So better err on the side of caution.Then continue with the Waning Part. Therefore, you can use any yarn weight and needles you like and knit either a large shawl or a small shawlette.

Since Ruffliato eats up a lot of yarn due to the ruffles, a lighter yarn is recommended if you want to knit a large shawl. It will weigh a lot otherwise. Dibadu Flufftikuss and Dibadu Seda de Campo are the original yarns I used, so naturally they are the best choice.

I prefer to knit a bit tighter with thinner needles and I used 1620y/1475m of the lovely Kid Silk based Flufftikuss Kapriole No.93 by Dibadu as Yarn A combined with 1565y/1430m Seda de Campo Lace „Verliebt ” by Dibadu as Yarn B for a shawl with the length of 64”/162cm and a width of 35”/89cm. I knitted another shawl with 920y/840m of Cotton Ball “Lucid” as Yarn A and 920y/840m of Zauberball Cotton “Strandläufer” as Yarn B - 56”/142cm length and 23.5”/60cm width.

Ruffliato is a modular knit but there is no seeming involved and no weaving in lots of loose ends either. It is a reversible shawl. One side will highlight Yarn A and the other side will highlight Yarn B. The structure is easy to follow once you have grasped the principle. This makes it a perfect project for travelling or knitting when watching a movie. But if you more details you will find all instructions in written and charted form.
