All proceeds from the sales of this pattern will go to a local charity Pulmonary Fibrosis NI . My mum has recently be diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and this local charity has been a great support, so I wanted to give something back. The Run Free Cowl is a stranded colour-work, charted pattern for adults. I love animal print and started by designing a pattern with this in mind. However, what I ended up with was a little different, and not so animal print, but a fun repeating pattern.

Alongside the cowl pattern, I have also added instructions for an infinity version. The infinity cowl takes a little more yarn and the sample is in 4-ply.

The pattern can be amended to suit your needs in terms of yarn weight, width, depth and colour, so have fun making and adapting the pattern.

In terms of the cowl, I would always use at least a DK (light worsted) weight yarn as I find anything lighter the cowl doesn’t sit but this is a personal preference. But for the infinity version 4-ply works well as it is double layered. You could also knit the infinity in a DK (light-worsted) weight yarn.

Suggested Yarn:

DK Weight Yarn: I used yarn from my stash which is approximately, 310m (340 yards)/100g skein; I used 205m (225 yards) of Caramel/Biscuit (MC) and 118m (130 yards) of Purple Tweed (CC). These were both acrylic based yarns.

4-ply sock yarn, I used Winnie’s Yarn by Crochet Knit Love by Jo, 400m (437 yards)/100g skein; I used 300m (75g) of the Turquoise colourway (MC) and 300m (75g) of the Orange (CC).

Suggested Needles:

DK Cowl: 24” (60cm) circular knitting needles in 3.5mm and 4mm (or size required to obtain gauge).

4-ply infinity: 24” (60cm) circular knitting needles in 3.25mm (or size required to obtain gauge).

Notions:

Stitch markers (optional) to mark beginning of round and pattern repeats, Scissors, and tapestry needle. These are the notions needed for both versions of the cowl.

Gauge:

For this pattern, using DK yarn, 26sts and 30 rows of stranded colour-work per 4in (10cm). And for 4-ply yarn, 30sts and 32 rows of stranded colour-work per 4in (10cm).

Sizing:

Cowl: Circumference: 66cm (~26”) / Height: 31cm (~12”)
Infinity: Circumference: 41cm (~16”) / Length: 64cm (~25”)
