Saami-Inspired Mittens
The Saami people live in the northern most areas of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia and are the nomadic indigenous people of Scandinavia. Their folk costumes are made of bright colors and their knitted mittens, worn on special occasions, follow this tradition. These mittens, inspired by a pair I saw in a museum in Helsinki, begin with a traditional three-color braided cast-on and are worked in bands of patterning made of 2 and 3 colors within a round. The thumb is without a gusset and the tip is made pointed in the classic way. The pattern includes how-to photos for the cast-on and for opening the thumb hole as well as charts.
Optional: 1 set dpns size US 2 (2.75mm) for sections using three colors.
1 skein of each of four colors is needed.
