This pattern has been written so that you can use any weight yarn, I recommend any #4 or #5 weight yarn. You will need at least 2 colours for the effect to show up. I prefer to use Caron x Pantone because of the multiple colour choices.
I have included a chart that gives my recommended number of rows for both Caron X Pantone braids, either the regular or the bamboo (see sizing chart).

If you are making a messy bun hat, directions are included. To make a slouchier version you will need to perform one extra colour change (this may mean the difference between 1 or 2 braids being needed for the Caron x Pantone yarn).
