This pattern is available from etsy.com for £4.20.

A knitting pattern for a cardigan to fit a 0-6 months old baby.

The sailors’ rib pattern on this sweet, round-necked cardigan gives all the appearance of a heavier, aran-weight knit but it is worked in a soft, lightweight 4-ply (sport/ 5-ply) yarn. Add some brown buttons to a lemon or cream-coloured yarn to complete the illusion. Instructions are included for a buttonband on either the left or right front, making is suitable for a boy or a girl. Although the illustrated cardigan is in lemon, the pattern is just as clear in any colour - from white to darker shades.

The cuffs are worked in simple single rib, as are the button and buttonhole bands. The pattern on the main body is called Sailors’ Rib and worked over 4 rows using knit and purl stitches. Once the first 4 rows are established, this is a very easy pattern to follow. The rib produces an all-over texture which gathers the fabric slightly width-wise, ensuring a perfect fit as Baby grows.

Actual chest measurement 18 ins (23 cms)
Sleeve length 6 ins (15 cms)
Length underarm to bottom 4½ ins (12 cms)
Length neck to bottom 8¼ ins (21 cms)

Materials

  • Pair each of 2.75mm (UK size 12 and US size 2) and 3.25mm (UK size 10 and US size 3) needles • Safety pins and stitch holders • 5 buttons • 100g of baby 4-ply yarn is recommended. However, the illustrated cardigan weighed 70g after making up so you may use less than a full ball. Always buy sufficient yarn, however.

PLEASE NOTE - the cardigan is displayed on a knitted mannequin. This pattern is available separately in the British High Sewciety Etsy store.
