Skill Level: Experienced
Finished Measurements: 20” wide x 68” long. for a shorter stole or scarf, omit one or more repeats of the central panel pattern.
Yarn: Jamieson & Smith Cobweb-weight Shetland (½oz/14g; 225yds/205m; wool) 6 skeins White
Needles:
- Size 2 (2.75mm) needles, or size to obtain gauge
- Optional: Two size 2 (2.75mm) double-pointed needles (dpn) for the edging
Extras:
- Waste yarn for cast-on
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch holder or waste yarn for holding stitches
- Stitch markers
- For dressing: Powdered starch or cornstarch, rust-proof T-pins or dressing frame, knitting cotton for lashing
Blocked Gauge: 32 sts and 48 rows to 4”/10cm in garter st, using size 2 (2.75mm) needles.
Construction Notes: “This stole, knit on a garter st ground, has no bound-off edges. The central panel is knit first and the first border worked directly afterwards. Sts are picked up from the cast-on edge of the central panel for the second border. The vandyked lace edging can be knit with shaped and mitered corners around the periphery of the stole, or it can be knit straight, separately, and sewn on.”
Notes:
- Do not slip sts at beginning of rows unless specified. The knitting will be subject to considerable stretching during dressing; slipped sts decrease elasticity.
- See Techniques, p. 162, for invisible cast-on and garter st grafting.
