Daffodil Fun Facts!

Did you know that Daffodils are the first flowers to bloom in spring?

  • These beauties go by many names. Sea Daffodils, Marsh Orchids, Sand Lilies, Sea Lily, Lily of St. Nicholas, and of course their botanical name Pancratium Maritimum. Pancratium: comes from the Greek and literally means “All Strength” Maritimum: comes from Latin and means “from the sea-coast”

  • Sand Daffodils can be found along the beaches growing up from the sand!

  • The can grow up to 15 flowers on 1 stalk

  • These beautiful sea flowers are part of the Amaryllidaceae family… cousins to the Amaryllis?

  • The first representation of this Pancratium Lily is mentioned by Evans, who discovered it during the excavations he made in the palace of Knossos (1896). There is a painting of this plant in the well-known wall painting with the blue-bird in the palace of Knossos which is considered as the first representation of the Sea Daffodil. Its use is described by Dioscorides and Theophrastus.

  • They are considered endangered
