When I started working on my Sandkorn hat (Sandkorn = grains of sand), I just couldn’t stop!
It was so FUN to work and to play around with different ways of combining knit and purl sts. With only 2 colours used, I was amazed to see the diversity of the pattern and just couldn’t leave the work until it was finished.

And now I am excited to see this pattern worked up in different colours! 2 is a minimum, but the hat would also be lovely in several colours. Bold colours, vivid colours, soft, pastels, huge contrasts, with a variegated yarn as the back-drop….

Construction
The hat is worked bottom-up and in the round.
The knitting is really rewarding, seeing the different patterns/textures developing.
The stranded knitting/fair-isle is created by knit and purl sts. There are no long floats behind work, so no need to catch the floats - which makes everything easier:)

Size
The hat is one-size.
Worked at gauge the circumference is 47.5 cm/18”,
the height is 23 cm/9”.
If you want to work a larger/smaller hat you can modify by working at a different gauge.

Materials
Yarn: I used Filcolana ”Pernilla” to work my hat. This DK weight yarn comes in balls of 50gr/1.76oz and 175 m/191 yards. You will need 100 m/109 yards of MC – black (102) and 70 m/77 yards of CC – 977 (Marzipan). You may use a similar yarn that knits up to gauge.
Needles: for the ribbed brim you need a circular needle, 40 cm/16”, size 3 mm/US2.5. For the main-body of the hat you need a circular needle 40cm/16”, size 4 mm/US. A set of dpns 4 mm/US6 for the shaping of the crown. Notions: 1 removable stitch-marker. Blunt tapestry needle. Blocking tools. If you want to place markers between each pattern-repeat of the crown: 8 removable stitch-markers (make sure that the beginning of the round marker is different from the others).

Gauge
27 sts in stranded/fair-isle pattern = 10 cm/4”.
