“Sandstorm” is the sister cardigan to Landslide: another open front Half Brioche cardigan in a Sport weight yarn, which makes it suitable for spring and autumn, too.

The back features the same pattern as my Windstorm shawl reelased in March 2020. The increase and decrease lines in Half Brioche resemble windblown sand (and they will even create little “sandhills” before blocking).

Gauge for sample: 22 sts x 48 rows with needle 3,25mm in basic Half Brioche stitch, blocked lightly. (For comparison: approx. 26 sts x 34 rows with same needle in Stockinette).

Approx. 2000/ 2150/ 2300 m of a Sport weight yarn needed.

The cardigan is meant to be a bit oversized, so it comes in only 3 sizes:

  • S/ M: Back width 50cm
  • L: Back width 55cm
  • XL/ XXL: Back width 60cm (For “fine tuning”, work at a gauge of 1 st more or less per 10cm.)

Overview
These are the basic steps to work the cardigan (the big arrows in the sketch indicate knitting directions):

  • Step 1: Work a swatch to check gauge and to try out Half Brioche/ “Sandhills”.
  • Step 2: Work back bottom-up in “Sandhills” pattern, which is a Half Brioche variation with 4 lines of decreases and 4 lines of increases.
  • Step 3: Work right sleeve bottom-up (starting with a “Sandhills” variant at the cuffs), ending with a few short rows to shape mock sleeve caps. Put back side stitches on hold.
  • Step 4: Pick up stitches from lower right back, then reuse right sleeve’s front side stitches for upper right front. Work in Half Brioche “sideways” to front edge, first with a few shoulder increases and then with decreases for the front neck.
  • Step 5: Work left sleeve the same way as for right sleeve.
  • Step 6: Work left front in Half Brioche “sideways” to front edge, as a mirror-image to the right front piece.
  • Step 7: Join pieces/ close seams, e.g. pick up stitches and use the 3-needle-bindoff method.

Ruppert Soft Lamb, Lacashmi and Noble are all good choices for working half Brioche, with 2 strands held together - you could even mix 2 of those yarns.*

Yarn for my sample was De Rerum Ulysse, which could be purchased here: https://www.yarnoverberlin.de/browse/ulysse/de,0,5211,0,0...
