This ponytail/“messy bun” style beanie is made with a side to side construction, meaning it is worked in turned rows to make a panel before the ends are seamed together to close the beanie. The top of the beanie makes use of small short rows to reduce the bulk and create the rounded shape at the top, while also creating a lightly gathered look (the pattern includes photos to help with this stitch placement). After seaming, the top is left unworked, leaving an opening to pull a messy bun or ponytail through.
