I was inspired to create a cowl based on the Adinkra Symbol Sankofa meaning “return and get it.” The lines of the Sankofa wind their way and continuously turn back on themselves to return to the center. An upside down heart is added to represent the well of memories that feed your future. One can always try to run from the past, both yours and your community’s but they move you forward always. 

This cowl is appropriate for all beings on this planet. The simple construction is intentionally built to be only slightly wider at the bottom than the top to provide a snugger circumference around the face. The colorwork feels like dancing with your fingers. one begins with a lovely intro in the trailing pattern of the first section and moving into the more complex interplay of the Symbol. Then, as the Sankofa symbol implies, one looks back on your beginning by repeating the first chart. The folded edge is optional but helps to lock in the stitches and provide a smoother more polished look to the edges which are more likely to come in direct contact with the skin. 

As a first pattern, I hope all walks of life will feel they are a part of the human experience and able to wear, gift and receive this universal concept of remembering one’s history to make better strides going forward. 

The red and brown cowl is the base for the design using the recommended yarn. In addition to this, the green and purple cowl was knit using a wool and silk blend which gave it a little less structure and a slightly larger row gauge.
