Sans Frontieres
This easily-knit light shawlette, suitable for even a beginning knitter, is an asymmetrical triangle. The main color is knitted in garter stitch throughout, increasing one stitch each row; the contrasting color is knit in stockinette stitch while continuing the increases. You may make it as large as your yarn supply will allow – simply continue knitting until you have just enough yarn left to bind off. The lines of contrasting color may be added at any point in the knitting. The directions given here are for the shawl as I have done it.
Let me tell you how my design came to be. Not long after the terrorist mass shootings in Paris, Karida Collins (who is owner and artist of the Neighborhood Fiber Company in Baltimore) wrote this:
“I want to say something profound about the events of the last week. I want to draw parallels between the pervasive fear for one’s safety in my hometown of Baltimore last May to the same fear in France, Syria, Lebanon, Mali, Nigeria, et. al. Mostly though, I am without words. I cannot express the extent of my sorrow for people in communities that are torn apart by terror. My heart just aches and I feel paralyzed by my own grief.
“It is my desire to move beyond that grief and heartache that prompted me to create a new color - Sans Frontières… Without Borders. … 100% of the sales from all Sans Frontières yarn
will go to Mèdecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). The yarn will be available in all bases until December 31, 2015. As it will be dyed to order, please allow 1-2 weeks for delivery …” In a recent newsletter, she reports a total of $10,210.00 donated to Doctors Without Borders.
The colorway is no longer available, as it was a limited edition for the fund raiser; but she has lots of lovely colors of Rustic Fingering available in her shop http://www.neighborhoodfiberco.com/. I will contribute 100% of the sales to Doctors Without Borders until the end of 2016.
