Santa's Plaid Hat
This pattern is worked in the rounds from the bottom (brim) up to the top and then sewed closed with a sewing needle and extra yarn from fastening off.
It features a pom pom.
This pattern works in color changes throughout the round. It does not require cutting each new color change where you would typically need to weave in a lot of ends at the finish of the project. Instead the color changes are carried through the entire hat below and behind the stitches. I would recommend using colors that are not extremely different from one another (like white and black) for the colors may show through as you carry them under. If you decide on colors that are lighter and darker to one another, test the stitches first and decide if you would like to carry the colors or cut and join each new color change as you go.
Stitches used are:
Ch (chain),
Hdc (half double crochet),
Fpdc (Front post double crochet),
Bpdc(back post double crochet),
Sl st (slip stitch),
Hdc dec (Half double crochet decrease)
Gauge:
4 inches = 13 hdcs
2 inches = 6 rows
Size:
This hat is made a little on the big side with room to stretch so that it can fit a man or woman’s head. If you need a smaller size, go down a hook size. You can also use a smaller gauged yarn to make the hat smaller.
