São Brás de Alportel dates back to the Paleolithic times, as proven by several findings such as flint chips, quartz and quartzite to name but a few.
It has been occupied by the Romans, the Visigoths and the Islamic people. In the 19th century, during the Second Industrial Revolution, the town became a very important economic center. The creation of vast plantations of the Cork Oak made São Brás de Alportel the largest cork producing center in Portugal. The municipality was founded in 1914.
One of the biggest feasts of the town is celebrated on Easter Sunday and is called the “Festa das Tochas Floridas” or the “The Feast of the Flowery Torches”. This feast dates back to 1596 when the population was finally able to expulse the English Occupants with the use of sticks called “Cachamorras”. To celebrate this victory, the men joined together in a procession and decorated their sticks/torches with flowers.
Its on the Feast of the Flowery Torches that I based my design on. The main colour represents the torch and the colourwork the flowers.

São Brás de Alportel remonta ao Paleolítico, como comprovam vários achados como lascas de sílex, quartzo e quartzito, para citar apenas alguns.
Foi ocupada pelos romanos, pelos visigodos e pelo povo islâmico. No século 19, durante a Segunda Revolução Industrial, a cidade se tornou um centro econômico muito importante. A criação de vastas plantações de sobreiros fez de São Brás de Alportel o maior centro produtor de cortiça em Portugal. O município foi fundado em 1914.
Uma das maiores festas da cidade é celebrada no domingo de Páscoa e é chamada a “Festa das Tochas Floridas”. Esta festa remonta a 1596 quando a população finalmente conseguiu expulsar os ocupantes ingleses com o uso de paus chamados “Cachamorras”. Para celebrar esta vitória, os homens juntaram-se em procissão e enfeitaram os seus tochas com flores.
É na festa das tochas floridas que baseei meu projeto. A cor principal representa a tocha e o trabalho a duas cores as flores.
