Spring 2024 Serena Capsule Collection

Serena, our sportweight baby alpaca-pima cotton yarn, is a yarn destined for soft, close-to-the skin garments and accessories. The yarn is amazingly versatile at the range of gauges it can accomplish, from a compact and opaque fabric to a loose, gauzy one. Sardinia is a cardigan that can be worn open as a second layer or closed as a first. Larger needles keep the ruffles soft with maximum drape; smaller needles and a firmer gauge make the body of the garment crisp in contrast.

Manos del Uruguay SERENA (60% baby alpaca, 40% pima cotton; approx. 170 yds/50 g): 7 (7, 8, 8) (9, 10, 11, 12) sks

US 3/3.25 mm straight needles or 29” circular needle, or size needed to obtain gauge
US 5/3.75 mm 29” to 36” circular needle

Waste yarn for stitch holders
Nine (nine, nine, nine) (nine, nine, ten, ten) ½” buttons
Tapestry needle

GAUGE
24 sts and 30 rows = 4”/10 cm in St st using smaller needles, after blocking and hanging (see Notes).
21 sts and 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in St st using larger needle

NOTES
The lower body is worked in one piece to the underarms, then divided for working the back and fronts separately to the shoulders. The sleeves are worked flat and seamed during finishing. The ruffles at the lower edge and cuffs are worked using the larger needle and gathered to the body and sleeves by a row of double decreases.

This luxurious, versatile blend of alpaca and cotton may require extra care when swatching to achieve the best results. Make a generous swatch, about 6” to 8” square. Wash the swatch according to the label instructions and lay flat to dry. Using clothespins or clips, hang the dried swatch overnight, and then check the gauge again.
