This pattern uses about 5.5 plates of Unspun Icelandic, held double. To substitute a bulky or super-bulky yarn, you will need approximately 800 yards/730 m.

Widely spaced cables give Sastrugi the texture of ripples in the snow. Worked on large needles, this project knits up quickly into an afghan that is lightweight yet warm and snuggly. The I-cord edging is knit along with the afghan, giving the piece a finished look without a lot of fuss. This pattern uses cables, I-cord cast on, and I-cord bind off; these techniques are explained in the pattern, as is the light fulling technique used for the sample. Instructions are both charted and written out.

You will also need a cable needle and a tapestry/yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Re-released December 2013 using a more available yarn, with new charts and written instructions.
