The Saticoy Hat is named for a little pocket of unincorporated Ventura County on the banks of the Santa Clara River. People have lived in Saticoy for at least 5,000 years, thanks to its sheltered location and natural underground springs. Today, it’s a quiet neighborhood with just over 1,000 residents that’s bordered by acres of citrus and a dry riverbed. It has a special place in my heart, because it’s where my elementary school is located.

Size: This hat is designed to fit snugly on a 22-inch (56 cm) head.

Yarn: DK weight yarn, no more than 130 yards

Suggested yarn: Classic Elite Yarns Magnolia, 110m (120 yds)

A note about yarn: It looks like Magnolia has been discontinued, though there are still balls of it available online. If you are having trouble tracking it down and want to use a similar yarn, I suggest using either Manos del Uruguay Silk Blend or Classic Elite Yarns Escape.

Suggested needles:
• US size 5 (3.75 mm) circular or double-pointed needles (or two sizes smaller than size needed to get gauge) (for the ribbed brim)
• US size 7 (4.5 mm) circular or double-pointed needles (or size to get gauge) (for the main body of the hat - make sure you have a set of needles that will allow you to close the hat completely)

Notions:
Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors

Gauge:
4” square/10 cm square = 24 stitches x 32 rows on sz 7 needles in stockinette after blocking
