Saturn Sleeves
Use scraps to knit this midweight shrug for a truly unique finished piece! Saturn Sleeves are knit from the cuff up to make a sort of hybrid shrug/sleeves/cropped cardigan.
This simple design shapes to the body and looks impressive when finished, but the project itself is relatively easy, pairing stockinette in the round with small details to emphasize the
scrappiness and increase patterns.
The front fits freely, and the sleeves themselves are close-fitting with a straight, open cuff.
Work is in the round, so the knitting is easy if you’re used to that technique. Familiarity with i-cord helps too!
A note on materials: there’s some flexibility here, particularly with the crochet hook—I included the size I used, but any hook that’s not wildly under- or oversized for the yarn will work for the brief amount of finishing that requires one. Similarly, it’s possible, but potentially less comfortable, to complete the whole project with DPNs and a 16” circular—use the combination of tools you have on hand that are most comfortable for you!
Materials:
- 680-750 yards of Malabrigo Yarns Arroyo or similar sport- to DK-weight yarns. Samples are shown in Malabrigo Yarns Arroyo, Undead Yarns, Noro Taiyo Sock, and Knitpicks Chroma Fingering, as well as some handspun scraps.
- A set of 5 DPNs in US6-8/4.0-5.0mm, or size needed for gauge.
- One 16-24” circular needle in size needed for gauge. (Work is in the round and can be completed on a 16” circular, but both lengths may come in handy.)
- Spare circular needle in same size or one size smaller
- Crochet hook for finishing (F/3.75mm or size preferred)
- Tapestry needle
- Removable stitch markers
Gauge:
Gauge is 23 sts and 28 rows over 4”/10cm of blocked stockinette stitch, worked in the round. Please be sure to check your gauge!
