✨ It’s time to break out the sequins! ✨
Strictly Come Dancing in the UK (aka Dancing with the Stars in the USA and many other titles in lots of other countries) is one of my favourite times of year - I only have to hear the opening notes of the theme tune and I get goosebumps of excitement!
As a new knitting designer, I wanted to spend some time on developing a sock pattern for this year’s Strictly Sock-a-Long (hosted by the lovely Ali of ‘The Little Drops of Wonderful’ podcast on YouTube) - the pattern is based on the weaving steps of a Foxtrot or American Smooth, as the couple’s feet glide around the dance floor, intertwining yet (hopefully!) never tripping each other up. Very often, the producers save the potentially best dance of the night until the very end of the night, and I always look forward to that last performance the most. This is where the name of my pattern comes from, to ‘Save the Last Dance’.
An elegant but easy pattern, there are no complicated steps (see what I did there ) to the stitch pattern. Why not use a sparkly sock yarn to add your own bit of glamour to your Saturday nights! ✨
I hope you enjoy knitting your Strictly Socks while watching Strictly Come Dancing in whatever country you live!
Level: Advanced Beginner to Intermediate
You will need to know how to knit from charts (although written instructions are provided if you prefer) and be familiar with the construction of a knitted sock.
Sizes available:
Medium (average size) - approx. 22cm foot circumference
Women’s : UK 6-8; EU 39-41; US 8-10
Men’s : UK 8-9.5; EU 42-44; US 9-10.5
(men’s sizes are approximate)
You will need:
• Approx 100g of sock/4 ply yarn (approx 400m/437yds)
• Contrasting mini skein of yarn if required, for heels and toes
• 2.5mm short (23cm or 30cm) circular knitting needles - or your preference of double-pointed needles or long circular needle for magic loop
• Stitch markers to mark the middle and end of rounds, and lace chart repeats if preferred
• Scissors
• Darning needle for ends
Gauge: not critical as you try the sock on for size as you work, but be aware that if you have a particularly loose or tight gauge, you will use a different amount of yarn.
Worried that you won’t be able to concentrate on the pattern while watching the show? Why not use a tally or row counter to keep track of which round of lace you’re working - or even just work the lace chart for the leg of the sock (at the beginning of Strictly when the shows are so loooonnng!), then once you’ve worked the leg and the heel just knit every round (once the shows are shorter and the dancing level is getting better so you don’t want to miss anything!)
Enjoy the pattern!
