This scarf features an argyle pattern, shark design, and bilingual text which reads “save the sharks” and “say no to shark fin” on one end and the Chinese equivalent, “拯救鯊魚” and “向魚翅說不” on the opposite end.

The scarf is constructed using the double-knitting technique, in which the front and back sides are knitted simultaneously, creating a reversible, double-thick layer of fabric.

The overall length of the scarf can be adjusted by knitting the desired number of argyle pattern repeats. To knit a 48” long scarf, approximately 330 yards of each color is required (this example was knit using Cascade Heritage Sock yarn at a gauge of 28st = 4”, which in the argyle pattern equates to 2 argyle diamonds wide by 2.5 diamonds high measuring 4” square).

To knit this scarf, follow the charts provided on page 2 and 3 (charts are worked from the bottom - up). The charts on pages 4-7 are provided for reference. Each square of the chart represents a pair of stitches - one for each side of the scarf. The first stitch of the pair is knit and the second stitch of the pair is purled in the opposite color (this creates the reversed design on the other side).

For all odd-numbered rows, knit the first stitch in the color indicated on the chart, and purl the second stitch in the opposite color. Even-numbered rows are worked with the back side facing you, and therefore the colors of the chart must be reversed (in other words, knit the first stitch in the opposite color from the chart, and purl the second stitch in the same color as the chart).

Since text cannot be reversed like the rest of the design without being mirror-image on the back side, the text portions are worked slightly differently. All main color (MC) and contrasting color (CC) stitches (shown in the chart in teal/white) are worked as described above, but for stitches marked in pink always work both stitches of the pair in CC, and for green stitches work both in the MC. On even-numbered rows, reverse colors for teal/white stitches as you normally would, but do not reverse colors for pink/green stitches.

As you are stitching the text portions of the design, be careful that the yarns do not cross or become twisted. For example, if you are working both stitches of a pair in CC, then the MC yarn should run between the two stitches to ensure it will not be visible.

When ending one row and beginning the next, remember to twist the yarns once - this keeps the edges of the scarf connected.

The included chart designs may also be used with other crafts or knitting techniques including intarsia and fair isle/stranded colorwork. The text designs can also be stitched using the “duplicate stitch” technique if preferred.
