Before I started knitting, I didn’t appreciate cabling. I thought it was all 2x2 columns repeated around a whole sweater. That was before I saw the intricate cable panels on Aran jumpers, the traditional sweaters made for fishermen in the Aran Islands. These cables caught my attention and led me down the rabbit hole in search of more cable knits.

The Saxon cable featured in this pattern is a commonly used cable pattern with a Celtic feel that speaks to that part of me with Irish ancestry. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I found myself putting my finished Saxon Cup Sleeve on my wrist to see how it would look on a sweater sleeve. I am a bit jealous of the cup or jar that gets to wear this!

Pattern Information

This is knit in the round from the top down. It is an intermediate level pattern due to the cabling. The pattern includes knits, purls, and cabling. Both written instructions and a cable knitting chart are included in the pattern. If you would like to make a taller cup sleeve just do a second repeat of the Saxon Cable Panel. The pattern has been tech edited and test knit.

Finished Measurements: 3.75”/9.5cm tall and 8.25”/21cm circumference

Yarn: about 45yd/41m of worsted weight

Suggested Yarn: Wool of the Andes yarn by Knit Picks
(worsted 100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 110yd/100m per 1.75oz/50g ball) Color: Bamboo Heather, 1 ball

Gauge: 24 sts x 26 rnds = 4” (10cm) in St st
2 patt rep (64 sts) of saxon cable panel = 8.25”/21cm

Needles: Size US 6 (4.00 mm) dpns or 32” (80cm)
circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Stitch markers, cable needle, and tapestry needle
