Scalemaille Dice Pouch
EDIT: I really appreciate all of my amazing pattern testers sending me pattern notes. There seems to be a lot of confusion over how I handled the increases. I did it a weird way so as not to throw off the alternating scale pattern, but it’s confusing so many people that I am definitely going to have to figure out a better way in the final pattern. Sorry about that.
People have mentioned selling these items and I’m fine with that. I’d prefer people wait for a finished pattern before you mass produce them for faire or something (I don’t want an imperfect pattern to ruin my stellar reputation :P), but I don’t mind if you sell your test FOs on etsy or what not.
I’m a procrastinator, so that means keep testing and sending me notes on making this pattern better. The longer I procrastinate, the longer this stays free :)
THIS PATTERN IS CURRENTLY FREE TO PATTERN TESTERS ONLY. I AM RELEASING IT ON THE HONOR SYSTEM.
Downlolading this pattern for free to help me test it obligates you ethically-but-not-legally to:
1) Test the pattern for me and send me pattern notes.
2) Send me a photo of your finished object that I can use here, on the pattern page, to show some variety of color and style. Photos will be attributed any way you like.
Once enough people have tested the pattern and I have perfected it, it will be on sale properly here and on etsy. Of course you could just take it and use it for free now without sending me notes or photos, but I am asking you super nicely not to.
YOU: Get a super cool pattern for free
I: Get notes and photos.
That’s a pretty nice deal, right?
Okay! On to the pattern description:
DESCRIPTION
I really wanted to make a scalemaille dice pouch but the patterns currently available didn’t have a tight enough scale weave to please me, plus I wanted to do some fancy finishing. So I made up my own pattern with a very tight scale overlap and NO HOLES showing. It’s also a little bigger than other dice pouch patterns I’ve seen. Whether you use this pattern or one of the other ones really depends on what characteristics you like in your crochet scailmaille. This patterns offers:
- larger size
- tight scale overlap with no holes showing
- fancy finish
If you like a smaller pouch or a looser scale weave, there are at least 3 other great patterns for this kind of pouch on ravelry!
This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, but one size up or down will probably still work just fine because gauge is of only approximate importance. A slightly thinner yarn will make a tighter scale overlap, while a slightly thicker yarn will make a slightly more loose scale overlap. Just remember to still use the F hook and you should be fine. This pattern doesn’t take a lot of yarn so it’s great for stashbusting. There’s no reason at all to use any kind of expensive fancy yarn for this pattern. Dig out that Red Heart you’ve grown out of and finish it off. BUST THAT STASH.
Last but not least, I got my scales from http://theringlord.com. They have a really awesome variety of scales in different colors and metals. The anodized aluminum scales are the most popular because they are cheap and bright, but if you want to make a titanium dice pouch, more power to you! This pattern uses SMALL scales. Buying a mixed bag of 1500 will give you a nice variety of scales to mix and match for your first dice pouch. If you want a solid color, however, there won’t be enough in the mixed bag to do a whole pouch in a single color, so buy 4 100 count bags of that color instead. Tell them Jamie O’Marr referred you in your order comments ;)
