Scallop of the Sea
I’m not really a “trendy” person. I go for classic shapes and I own a lot of vintage (read: old) clothing. But I’ve fallen for two trends this fall – scallops and oversized clutches. Put them together, and you get Scallop of the Sea, an oversized, scalloped, fold-over beauty that’s big enough to hold your wallet AND iPad, but hot enough to take to the bar.
Finished Size 13” by 11”, folded. 13” by 18”, unfolded.
Materials
Yarn: Knit Picks Stroll Sport, 75% Merino 25% Nylon (Polyamide); 137yds/50g: One skein each Jack Rabbit Heather (C1), Wave Heather (C2), Rainforest Heather (C3), Pumpkin (C4).
Yarn: Bumblebirch Blossom, 50% Suri Alpaca 50% Merino; 327yds/100g: One skein each Glacier (C1), Mustard (C2).
Needles: Size 6 (4.0 mm): 24” circular (cir). Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Stitch markers (m), tapestry needle.
Lining Materials: 1/2 yard of woven fabric; 1/2 yard of mid-weight fusible interfacing; sewing thread to match; matching invisible zipper, 12-14” long; hand sewing needle, fabric scissors, pins.
Gauge 22 sts and 25 rows = 4” (10 cm) in St st on size 6 needles.
Notes Scallop of the Sea is stranded knitting in the round. After you knit a big, scalloped tube, you will seam it flat on one end, and then the fun starts! It’s lined with fabric and interfacing, to give it extra oomph, and finished with a colorful zipper.
Worried about sewing the lining? I created a detailed photo tutorial on the Holla Knits blog: http://www.hollaknits.com/blog/scallop-of-the-sea-sewing-tutorial/
