The Scandinavian socks are knitted from cuff down. They are started with an optional tubular cast on, which makes the cast on edge beautiful and stretchy. The socks are knitted with a stranded colorwork pattern using traditional Scandinavian stitch patterns. The 4-stitch pattern repeats means that the colorwork is easy to memorize and suitable even for beginners, because there aren’t any long floats of yarn.
The short-row heels are worked using German short rows. All techniques used are explained in the pattern.

Yarn

130-150 m / 150-175 yards of fingering weight sock yarn in main color (MC), and

200-250 m / 225-275 yards of fingering weight sock yarn in contrasting color (CC).

Needles

2.5 mm / US 1.5 DPNs or circular needles with a cable suitable for short circumference knitting for the cuffs and toes

3 mm / US 2.5 DPNs or circular needles with a cable suitable for short circumference knitting for the colorwork

Always use the needle size that gets you the right gauge! I recommend knitting the colorwork using a needle one size larger than you would normally use for plain Stockinette stitch socks in fingering weight yarn.

Gauge
32 sts and 34 rounds = 10 cm / 4 inches of stranded knitting in the round on larger needles, after blocking.
