Scathach is a figure from Gaelic mythology. She is a warrior queen or goddess who is said to have dwelled in the mountains of the Isle of Skye, and some of the great Irish warrior heros travelled to her to be trained in the martial arts.

Yarn advice: Although the gauge is more typical for worsted weight yarns, I would recommend using an aran weight (i.e. a yarn with a recommended gauge of 16 or 18 sts per 10 cm / 4’’) to achieve a dense fabric that will be warm and keep its shape well. Using a thinner yarn or a heavier fibre like a superwash wool or alpaca will result in a floppier hat.

Needles: Use the needle size that gives you the required gauge, most likely 3.5 to 4.5 mm / US #4 to 7.

Sizing: The original hat was knitted to fit an average woman’s head. The size can easily be adapted during the knitting. The pattern contains modification advice and math help.

The cable pattern for the brim is charted. You cannot work the pattern without using the chart.
