Schadel Slouch
The Schädel Slouch is a unisex slouch hat (Toque) inspired by the Punisher Skull logo. As with my Phantom Skull Scarf pattern, this hat was designed as a Christmas gift for my husband, who loves the Punisher, and uses the likeness on his car and work gear.
The way the brim is knit gives you a double thickness of knitted fabric and provides that extra warmth for your ears!
When worn ‘right’ side out, the hat is a simple one-color slouch hat in stockinette stitch with a ribbed brim. When worn with the ‘wrong’ side out, it’s a funky, fun slouch hat in reverse stockinette stitch with a ring of skull colorwork around the bottom.
Sizing: One size fits many. The instructions are written for only one size, however you can make small adjustments to the fit by using smaller or larger needles than suggested, as well as adjusting how long you make it before beginning decreases.
The hat as written fits both my husband (who has a large head) and my average head as well.
Approximate finished size: 19” around at brim
Yarn: Knit with DK weight yarn.
Needles: 2 different sizes needed - US 5 and US 4 circular needles or preferred needles for knitting in the round.
Skill Level: Adventurous Beginner – Intermediate
If you are an adventurous beginner who has never tried colorwork before, the Schädel Slouch might just be a good first colorwork project. The chart is only 9 sts wide, repeated to the end of the round.
Skills Needed: knit, purl, simple decreases, knitting in the round, provisional cast on, changing needles during the project, colorwork, chart reading, DPN knitting.
While some of these skills may seem daunting if you are unfamiliar with them, they can all be searched on the internet, and instructional videos found on YouTube if you are unsure what they are or how to do them. This pattern could be an opportunity to challenge yourself to learn something new!
