At my LYS, the staff members have adopted a term that they use when they can’t remember a thing’s actual name or there’s a word they can’t pronounce.

“What’s that you’re knitting?”
“Oh, it’s a schmur.”

It’s become so much of the local vernacular in the community of this shop that when I designed a hat in yarn colors dyed exclusively for this LYS, I knew there was only one thing I could call it. And thus Schmur, the hat, was born.

This pattern is worked in the round from the bottom up. A thick ribbed brim, meant to be doubled for extra warmth, leads into the colorwork pattern. The colorwork motifs are charted only.

To knit this pattern, you will need to know how to:

  • knit and purl when working in the round,
  • read and work from a colorwork chart, and
  • do basic decreases (k2tog and ssk).

Yarn estimates:
Main color: approximately 155 (170, 195) yds./142 (155.5, 178.5) m
Contrast color: approximately 60 (65, 75) yds./55 (59.5, 68.5) m
Note: Yarn estimates are exclusive of the optional pompom.

Please note that as the pompom is optional, instructions for making one are not included with this pattern.
