The “Schwan” (German for swan) is a sweater in Half Brioche with slanted lines on the lower body which are continued to shape the V front neck. The fronts’ shoulder pieces are worked even over the shoulders and joined to the back, which is ended early with short rows, so the back neck is V-shaped, too.

For knitters who prefer their sweaters to be less warm (and are not afraid of working more stitches), there is a “Cygnet” version in thinner yarn.

Instructions for a slipover version without sleeves are also included in the pattern.

Yarn & gauge
Needles: Main needle size is 3,25-3,5mm
(3,0mm for “Cygnet” version).
Gauge: 22 sts x 46 rows
(26 sts x 52 rows for “Cygnet”)
in Half Brioche.

Approx. 1300/ 1475/ 1550/ 1675/ 1800 m
(Cygnet: 1500/ 1650/ 1750/ 1875/ 2000 m)
of a (Light) Fingering weight yarn needed.

For my “Schwan” sample (in size L), I have used De Rerum Ulysse (100% wool, 185m/ 50g) in color “Bouleau”.
Ruppert Garne Soft Lamb (100% wool, 425m/ 50g) with 2 strands held together would also be a good choice.

For the thinner “Cygnet” version, I have used 2 strands of Ruppert Garne Noble (95% Geelong wool, 5% Cashmere, 500m/ 50g) held together, in color “Loch”.

If you buy yarn at Ruppert Garne for a “Schwan”, let the owner subknits know in the comments, and she will send you the pattern for free!

Worked at a gauge of 2 sts more/ less on 10cm, the sweater will get approx. one size smaller/ bigger.

The sweater should be worn with a little bit of ease at bust.
