Scilly Socks

The remote Isles of Scilly lie beyond Cornwall’s most south-westerly tip. Only to be seen from Land’s End on a clear day, this cluster of islands has played a significant role in Britain’s nautical history. Semi-tropical plants grow next to the white, sandy beaches with waters that are as clear as glass. These Isles know the perils of harsh winter storms and have countless shipwrecks scattered around their coastline.

Waves crash against the unforgiving rocks and have taken down many boats as well as the lives of sea dwellers over the years. But many have been saved by the brave and hardy folk of the Scillies. In a church on the island of St Agnes stands a stained-glass window showing scenes of rowers on a rescue mission, all wearing their woollen Ganseys and knitwear. These socks would not be out of place on the feet of one of those brave Scillonian souls.

The broken diamonds and triangles in this pattern replicate the rocks and wooden rowing boats depicted in that same stained-glass window. The variegated knits and purls on the top of the foot is a texture widely seen in historical Gansey jumpers, evocative of Cornwall.
