I love this one! This 1884 Victorian pattern was from The Young Ladies Journal: Complete Guide to the Work-table. It’s a lot simpler than the instructions make it look! Six motifs are knitted flat from the outside edge inward and sewn together. The pattern is mostly k2, p2 ribbing with a double decrease in the middle of the right-side rows. The pattern is also symmetrical about the center stitch. It’s so visually obvious that once you work a few rows of the main section, you might not need to look at the instructions again!
After knitting the original pattern, I changed the center decrease, added rows and stitches to emphasize the kite shape of the motif and eliminated the garter stitch sections. Mary Walker Phillips called the original pattern “Scottish Farmer” in her 1989 book Knitting Counterpanes. I hope you enjoy my version!

Skills needed: long-tail cast on, knit, purl, slip, k2tog, p3tog, yarn over, S2KP2 (slip 2 as if to knit together, knit 1, pass the 2 slipped stitches over the knit-1 stitch).

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check size and appearance. If knitted to gauge, the block will measure 9” across from one point to another.

16 yards of #10 crochet cotton thread will make about 1 motif in the stated gauge. Around 96 yards will make a 6-motif block in the stated gauge.
